let’s take a scare-cation this summer
I got to attend Sony’s world premiere of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and I felt like a giddy teen again! It also occurred to me that a weird number of gory movies are out this summer.
So if you’re a horror/thriller/mystery/supernatural fan like me, here’s a list of what’s out and what’s coming out:
I Know What You Did Last Summer- in theaters now
Just like the 1997 original, a group of friends cover up a death they caused on the fourth of July and they make a pact to keep it a secret. Stalked by a murderous fisherman with a hook, the friends ban together to solve the mysterious deaths and try to survive themselves! No spoilers but I was VERY happy with the cameos in this one. AND it’s directed by a woman (Jennifer Kaytin Robinson)!! I feel like the horror genre is often dominated by men so this is important!
“What are you waiting for?!” Grab tickets to see it in theaters and watch the original here: https://amzn.to/3TNu1EB. They’re both SO much fun! Here’s the trailer if you missed it.
28 Years Later- in theaters now
‘28 Days Later’ created the world and ‘28 Years Later’ is set there. A group of survivors who live on a small island have been kept relatively safe from the infected who live on the mainland. One of them ventures out and discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other mainland survivors too. I haven’t seen this one but it sounds like if you’re over the trauma caused by the covid era and enjoy shows like ‘The Last of Us’, add this one to your list! Click here for the trailer.
Final Destination Bloodlines- streaming now
The newest chapter in the ‘Final Destination’ franchise takes us back to the beginning and we learn what started it all. Newcomer (to me) Kaitlyn Santa Juana plays college student Stefani who is being tormented by a recurring nightmare and heads home to try to figure out WTF is going on. Will she cheat death? Stream now on Prime Video to find out! Watch the trailer here.
The Home- in theaters July 25th
Max (Pete Davidson) gets sentenced to do his community service at a retirement home and soon discovers that both residents and staff are concealing dark secrets. “And no fourth floor darlin’...off limits to you.” a staff member says in the trailer so OF COURSE he’s going to go to that floor! Or maybe the floor comes to him?! A movie from the creator of ‘The Purge’ is bound to serve some sick and twisted horror. Check out the trailer here.
Together- in theaters July 30th
Merging eyeballs and lips? Alison Brie and Dave Franco on-screen together in a horror film? I’m in.
‘Together’ is about a couple who moves to the countryside and a supernatural encounter starts to transform their bodies. I know there’s controversy as to whether the story was stolen or not but it sounds very entertaining and so freaky! This one might make you examine your codependent relationship. Can’t WAIT to see it! Click here for the trailer.
Weapons- in theaters August 8th
I don’t know what’s more chilling than a story about a bunch of missing kids.
When all but one vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. Julia Garner plays the teacher whose classroom is now empty. If you didn’t see Julia in Ozark, you should. I’ll be seeing her in ‘Weapons ‘for SURE. The girl can ACT. Watch the trailer here.
The Conjuring: Last Rites- in theaters September 5th
“How many Conjurings are there?” Is a thing I said out loud when I found out about ‘Last Rites’. The universe is vast– read all about it here. Turns out, this movie is the last chapter of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story. They take on one last terrifying case to help a family vanquish a demon from their home. I’ll be seeing this one for sure! Check out the trailer here.
HIM- in theaters September 19th
After suffering a potentially career-ending brain trauma, a promising young football player (Tyriq Withers- also in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’) joins an isolated compound to train under a dynasty team's aging quarterback (Marlon Wayans). As the training intensifies, it eventually spirals into something darker sending him down a disorienting rabbit hole.
I’ll watch anything Jordan Peele makes. He’s a visionary. He’s a producer on this one– handing over his usual directing duties to Justin Tipping whose work I wasn’t familiar with before this, but by the looks of this teaser, IT’S GOING TO BE GOOD!!
